The resources available on this planet are limited and with this increasingly rate of usage(consumerism) they will not last very long. This might lead to severe and devastating results even to the extent of extinction of human race from this planet. Reason for this extinction will be our dependency on the objects around us. A very basic and simple example - If internet stops working for a day “This world comes to a halt”, resulting into huge financial losses across all the economies, accidents, air-plane crashes etc.
Now to handle this we have two ways - Either we use the resources efficiently and try to return them back in someway Or we start re-using them in some or the other form.
The project will deal with re-using the material in other forms in order to bring a small change in the thinking pattern of humans. It will also look into reviving the resources in order to re-use them again and again, in this case it would be garments. The form, the shape, the property of the material might also change in the process but still it is an effort or may be one among the first steps to save this planet. The aim of doing so is to bring a change or awareness in human sensitivity towards using our resources, along with aesthetic values.
My contribution as a photographer would be to communicate and convey this message and bring an awareness.
Since we all understand fashion to some extent and can easily relate ourselves to it so I have chosen that as my medium to convey this message.
The garments used here can be draped in multiple ways by just opening up the knotted buttons. Once we open these knotted buttons it becomes a flat piece of fabric, which can again be converted into another garment. Hence if we all use garments like these we can save a lot of resources every year which go in the making of fabric. Secondly, to convey the message even more effectively the photograph prints are not taken on photographic paper as a lot of chemical wastage happens in printing on photographic paper. Instead of that the prints have been taken on -
a) Wrong printouts sheets generally in offices.
b) Old newspaper.
c) Printing and cutting waste of press.
For the final prints option A and B were rejected as there is still a possibility of re-using these papers. Aim here is to use the paper in such a way that it can not be used anywhere else. So the stripes from cutting press were pasted and handmade sheets were made. The final prints were taken on these sheets.
